Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew : The Grand Palace is Bangkok's major landmark. It was built in 1782 by King Rama I and was the centre of power for 150 years. In the complex is the Chakri Hall, a striking example of Italian architecture surmounted by a Thai-style roof, and the dazzling Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), which houses Thailand's most revered Buddha image. Each building in the complex is a work of art and the serenity that pervades the grounds makes it difficult to leave even after several hours.
